Electricity from Low Temperature Waste Heat

Commercial air conditioning and refrigeration systems work by removing heat from your building or cooler, and passing it to the environment. Despite the high cost of operation, these systems are remarkably energy-efficient. Typically, one watt of electricity produces 5 watts or more of cooling.  At the same time, one “ton” of cooling (12,000 btu’s) produces 1.3 tons of waste heat.

The technology to capture this heat from your AC/R systems has existed for decades. In fact, thousands of installations using this waste heat to heat water have proven that simply removing some of the heat from the AC/R increases the electrical efficiency of the system by up to 15%.

However, the temperature of the waste heat from your AC/R system will vary from day to day, and hour to hour, depending on the environment. And, of course, your equipment does not run constantly. Our VLTHE system compensates for these variables with a unique phase-change heat buffer storage tank which allows a continuous flow of heat to the VLTHE, at a constant temperature, so the VLTHE can make power continuously.

If you have 10 tons or more of AC/R equipment in use, a VLTHE system can save you $2000 per year, or more, per ton of AC/R you use, and pay for itself in 4 to 6 years, depending on your local electric rates and your specific installation. = 1.77 times the total electricity we use per day,

= Power from 8 million tons of coal (88,000 rail cars)/day

= The energy in 11,000,000 barrels of oil per day (more than we import)

 

Converting just 10% of this to electricity saves:
